In 1871 a United States Life-Saving Service post was opened on Long Beach Island adjacent to a small 10-acre island owned by Thomas Lovelady. The area was called Lovelady’s, and the name evolved into Loveladies. The Loveladies Property Owners Association was incorporated in 1951, and this small residential neighborhood is located between Barnegat Light and Harvey Cedars on Long Beach Island.
Loveladies is, in one sense, the most recently developed of the Long Beach Island communities thanks to ‘The Storm of the Century” in 1962 which virtually wiped out the existing structures. Following the storm the homes that were built are “modern” in scope and size, so much so that visitors to the area gossip about rumors of celebrities who might be visiting at one or the other of the impressive houses. Since all of the homes are private, and there are no hotels or motels available, the close-knit community of residents look forward to spending time with each other in the summer season.
Loveladies is a community of upscale privately owned homes primarily used during the summer. Since the homes in Loveladies are contemporary in design and extremely large in size - virtually “castles” by the sea and breathtaking to see - the community is considered the cultural “hub” of Long Beach Island. It is also the home of the Long Beach Island Arts and Science Foundation which is open year round.
There is an annual Seashore Open House Tour in August each year, affording the curious a chance to see the “castles.” It’s worth noting that all of the Loveladies beaches are open to the public. The view in any direction is inspiring.
There is free public parking in Loveladies, and access to the beach is available from six different points:
30 Street in Barnegat Light
Dolphin Lane (North Pumping Station)
Coast Avenue
Loveladies Lane (South Pumping Station)
